Daniel Menche graces us with a 40-minute cello drone that is both sensuous and perilous, hushed and cacophonous. Sounding like the re-ordering of natural elements after some sort of catastrophe, the piece is intended to take the listener beyond the “imprisonment” of language into a realm of post-human plasmic suspension. Deep, resonant bass tones course beneath roiling tides, a petri dish of electrified placidity. The Portland musician has pursued the marriage of noise and minimalism for decades, working with labels such as Sige, Touch, and Editions Mego, and Where Language Ends is another reminder of the power of his vast catalog and his penchant for both the immersive and subversive.
“The phrase ‘Music begins where words end’ has resonated with me before I even attempted to make any music. Only recently I realized that it originated from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Many variations of that saying have come from the mouths of people who rely on the freedom of music rather than the imprisonment of "words" for the expression of one’s self. As a personal mantra, I find this simple quote to be the most inspiring motive to create music… when words end. Where Language Ends is the soundtrack for when language finally has its own burial ground……someday.” – Daniel Menche
