Portland and Beirut rub shoulders again as Beacon Sound and Ruptured reveal their second co-release, the new album by Lebanese ensemble Kinematik entitled Murur al-Kiram. Over the course of 11 tracks, the band uses electronics, intricate double-drumming, guitar and bass to construct ambient soundscapes and hypnotic, propulsive rhythms – conjuring the ghosts of a diminishing future as well as an unresolved past. Subtle in both angst and joy, the album celebrates small victories in the face of great defeats, echoing the band’s conflicted mindset towards life in their country and community. Indeed, with the recent mass protests against dire social and economic conditions, still unresolved at the time of this writing, a vision of a democratic and postsectarian Lebanon has come more clearly into view, led in no small part by young people and the vibrant cultural milieu of Beirut.

...Like a forgotten spirit sweeping through an old hall, In The Fever Sun chills the soul and sets the tone for what the rest of the album is about to build upon: a thoroughly encapsulating sense of mental suspension.
The uncanny chatter of Iuna Niva's vocals, while arresting in affect, nevertheless avoid becoming a distraction from the pervading quiet awe of each piece. Instead, they act more as a faint yet distantly relatable supporting layer.

Funny, we buy things, put them in, and sometimes rediscover incredible gems we've lost- this is a particular example.......two brilliant artists capable of tempering each other, lifting each other- in short, doing what a collaboration is supposed to do .......we are in the midst of soaking in this gem........ss/tm editions vaché
The aptly named Gloomseeker turn in a powerhouse new LP, full of bleak, haunting songs, echo-drenched vocals, and shadowy atmospheres. Bandcamp New & Notable Apr 10, 2021

What a beautiful album, and "Max Brown" in particular is one of the most meditative jazz songs I've heard in some time. Listen with a good pair of headphones. blayze hembree
