The trio known as Sontag Shogun graces us with a special mini-suite of songs featuring collaborations with Lau Nau and Ora Cogan. From the opening notes of 12-minute ‘Photographs From A Moving Car’, as Laura Naukkarinen sings wistfully over a bed of warbly piano, through the tension underpinning ‘Plaid Lines’, Floréal is an autumnal ode to dying light and receding horizons.
“Sontag Shogun songs are like environments to float through, lost in hushed wonder … The band often seems to be caught in the act of simultaneously disassembling and reassembling its own dreamed-in compositions. To tag along is to drift, to engage Sontag Shogun’s acts of reinvention.” —Pitchfork
Sontag Shogun is Ian Temple, piano; Jesse Perlstein, voice, field recordings, electronics; Jeremy Young, oscillators, tapes, music box.
Floréal is a collection of songs written and recorded all over the temporal and spatial map. “Photographs” and “Floréal” were recorded by Seth Manchester at Machines with Magnets in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Laura Naukkarinen recorded her own vocals at home in Kimito, Finland. “Plaid lines” was recorded by Sontag Shogun at home in Montreal, QC and Queens, NY, and Ora Cogan’s vocals were captured on tape by Jeremy Young in Amsterdam, NL. “Lament” was recorded by John Hull in Greenwich, CT and assembled by Scott Solter in Durham, NC.
Floréal was mastered by Rafael Anton Irisarri at Black Knoll Studios in the Hudson Valley, NY. Layout by Andrew Neerman. We’re really proud of this beautiful music that came together under strange and complicated circumstances. Thanks so much for listening.

There really is nothing else that sounds quite like this project. The hypnotic soundscapes capture me enough for the whole 6+ hours to feel like no time has passed at all. Oh also it sounds phenomenal, this is like a 9 or a 10. meademan
This album makes me feel strong pulls of somberness and remorse, but a sense of maturity to it, as if it's but a distant scar now and am ready to move on.
The choice of slow moving cellos is very welcome on this album and makes the full piece feel full. Bombchu Link
Melancholic album "We are so tired of the darkness in our lives." All these works impressed me, they are so melancholy that they cause nostalgia or what? siloM
